<2ID¡¯s commitment to the ROK-US alliance continues>
CAMP RED CLOUD, Republic of Korea–Since 1950, the Soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division have contributed to the defense of the Republic of Korea and have defended the security and stability of the Korean Peninsula with our ROKA counterparts. Over the last 50-years, as an enduring member of the combined defense of the Korean peninsula in support of the Republic of Korea, the 2nd Infantry Division has been resolute in ensuring all of our Soldiers comply with Korean laws, conduct themselves with the highest standards of professionalism and respect the Korean culture.
Three Soldiers—Spc. Nicholas Myers, Pfc. Alex Wilkerson and Pvt. Marcus Cobb— assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division, who were accused of obstruction of performance of official duties by the Suwon district court for an incident that occurred at the Yongin Crribbean Bay water park, received two-year suspended sentences. Cobb and Wilkerson received six-month sentences, while Myers received a 10-month sentence.
Service members – within 2nd Infantry Division and elsewhere across the Korean peninsula – are subject to Korean laws as well as the U.S. Uniformed Code of Military Justice.
While the overwhelming majority of 2nd Infantry Division¡¯s Soldiers fulfill their service obligations in Korea without incident, the very few who violate host nation laws negatively impact the entire 2nd Infantry Division¡¯s mission.
¡°I do not condone and have zero tolerance for misconduct,¡± said Maj. Gen. Thomas S. Vandal, 2nd Infantry Division Commanding General. ¡°The actions of 99 percent of the Division¡¯s over 11,000 Soldiers demonstrate the true, positive character of the Warrior Division as active partners of the Alliance and the local communities.¡±
Incidents like the one at Carribbean Bay undermine the extraordinary efforts of Soldiers who contribute to their neighboring communities, like Soldiers near Uijongbu who volunteer to serve in a soup kitchen to feed the hungry, or Soldiers at Camp Casey in Dongduchon that volunteer to distribute coal and volunteer time at the local orphanages.
¡°I will not allow careless acts of indiscipline to tarnish 2ID reputation and our strong relationship with our Korean neighbors,¡± said Vandal.
The 2nd Infantry Division cooperated fully with the Korean National Police to ensure individuals were subject to due process under the SOFA and Korean laws. However, the Division leadership is committed to reinforcing educational programs to emphasize appropriate off-duty behavior and a provide a deeper understanding of South Korean culture.
¡°The recent acts of misconduct reflect on all of us. Everyone in the 2nd Infantry Division is responsible for keeping our fellow Soldiers from conducting acts of indiscipline,¡± said Vandal. ¡°We will continue to conduct training at the unit and individual level in an effort to ensure every Soldier understands the importance of their mission and that their individual choices and actions have an impact on the entire ROK-U.S. Alliance.¡±
