Investigation complete, TOW missiles no longer allowed at RLFC
YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – The investigation of the Dec. 30, 2015 incident in which a Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) missile flew off course and left the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex has determined that the missile malfunctioned due to a faulty guide wire, resulting in an inability to communicate with the fire control system.
The investigation, ordered by 3rd Marine Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Richard Simcock II, also determined that the Marines involved observed all necessary preparation and safety precautions and the incident was not the result of mishandling or poor gunner tracking.
As a result of this incident, Eighth Army Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Thomas Vandal has directed that units will no longer fire TOW missiles at RLFC out of concern for potential mishaps and the safety of the population in surrounding areas.
