대한민국 캠프 험프리스 – 제2보병사단, 한미연합사단 소속 장병이 1월 5일 포천시 외각에 위치한 로드리게스 실사격 훈련장의 단위 부대 훈련 중 장병이 운전하던 군 차량 전복사고로 인해 사망했다.

 

의료원들은 현장에서 매사추세츠 주 린 출신인 34세 제임스 L. 웬토 하사의 사망을 진단했다.

 

제2전투항공여단 소속 군 응급차량 수리병인 웬토 하사는 2009년 미군에 지원하였다. 오클라호마 주 포트 실과 사우스캐롤라이나 주 포트 잭슨에서 훈련을 마친 후 텍사스 주 포트 블리스에 배치되었다. 그는 2019년 5월 항공여단에 배치됐다.

 

웬토 하사의 소속 대대 대대장인 브리젯 달지엘 중령은 “웬토 하사는 탁월한 병사였고 리더였으며 아버지였습니다. 그는 2-2 공격헬기대대 가족의 중요한 구성원이었고 진정이 그리울 것” 이라고 말했다.

 

웬토 하사는 아프가니스탄으로 두번의 참전을 수행하였고 미육군전투배지 그리고 두개의 청동무공 미육군표창훈장을 수여받았다.

 

사고관련 사항은 현재 수사 중에 있다.

CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – A 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division Soldier died Jan. 5 when the military vehicle he was driving overturned during a unit-training event at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex, outside Pocheon.

 

Medical personnel pronounced Staff Sgt. James L. Wento, 34, of Lynn, Mass., dead at the scene.

 

Wento, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, joined the Army in January 2009. Following the completion of his training at Ft. Sill, Okla., and Ft. Jackson, S. C., he was assigned to Ft. Bliss, Texas. He arrived to 2CAB in May 2019.

 

Wento’s battalion commander, Lt. Col. Bridget Dalziel said, "SSG Wento was an extraordinary Soldier, leader, and father. He was an important member of the 2-2 Assault Helicopter Battalion family and will be sincerely missed.”

 

Wento completed two combat deployments to Afghanistan, and his awards and decorations include the Army Combat Action Badge and the Army Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters.

 

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation.
