CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – A 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division Soldier died Jan. 5 when the military vehicle he was driving overturned during a unit-training event at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex, outside Pocheon.
Medical personnel pronounced Staff Sgt. James L. Wento, 34, of Lynn, Mass., dead at the scene.
Wento, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, joined the Army in January 2009. Following the completion of his training at Ft. Sill, Okla., and Ft. Jackson, S. C., he was assigned to Ft. Bliss, Texas. He arrived to 2CAB in May 2019.
Wento¡¯s battalion commander, Lt. Col. Bridget Dalziel said, "SSG Wento was an extraordinary Soldier, leader, and father. He was an important member of the 2-2 Assault Helicopter Battalion family and will be sincerely missed.¡±
Wento completed two combat deployments to Afghanistan, and his awards and decorations include the Army Combat Action Badge and the Army Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation.
